Since my move to the East Coast two years ago, I have become familiar with deer. While it has become quite normal to see deer every day, I am still amazed by their beauty and grace. My children and I see deer while riding in the car and we always call out — “look at the deer!” with excitement and awe. On my walks, I have blessed to see deer and have often walked past them, sometimes at pretty close range (yes, the deer in the picture is one of them). In those magical moments, we were aware of each others’ presence. I have acknowledged the deer and them me. It is truly something to behold. When I think of deer, I typically think of nature’s grace. But I know from my teachers, that an animal’s presence in our lives is often more significant. So, in the ways of indigenous cultural groups, I am mindful of the times I see deer and sought the significance of their presence.
In addition to grace, deer are known for adapting to current environments. They are sensitive, fast-moving, and alert. They also typically live in herds. Rarely have I seen only one deer. According to Native American philosophy, the deer’s appearance in our lives is a call to explore our creativity, be more adaptable, and may signal sensitivity to change and shifts in our lives. The Huichol believe that if you see a deer, Spirit is trying to teach you something.
I can think of several lessons the deer symbolize in my life – adapting to a move that was fueled by Spirit, transitioning through shifts in my life with grace, nourishing a herd-like environment with my family. After each encounter with deer, I am always amazed at this wonderful four-legged creature and think “Aho Mitakuye Oyasin” (to all my relations) ,in the spirit of the Lakota people, who like all indigenous cultures, believe that we are one with nature – including the animals. I am honored by nature’s glorious existence in my life and the reminders to reflect deeply about my presence on the earth and my own journey.
