“When I let go of what I am, I become what I want to be.” Lao Tzu (Father of Taoism)
Take a pause and close your eyes and reflect on that statement. What do you think you are? What can you let go of? For me, I often define myself as a woman, a mother, a woman of African, Native American, and European descent, a manager, a daughter, a sister. If I let go of all of those descriptions, what am I left with?
Indigenous wisdom teaches us that we are more than what we see in the mirror. We are more than our physical bodies. We are Spirit with unlimited potential and a direct connection to the Source of All Things. In order to realize that Spirit, we are challenged to let go of our preconceived notions and beliefs. Let go in the sense that we open our minds to experience the oneness of all things. As we open ourselves, we evolve and make way for Spirit to move us toward what we really want to be. This thought brings us to the next question – what do you want to be?
Take a pause and close your eyes and reflect on that question. How easy is it to answer? It certainly makes me ponder deeply. What do I want to be? A good mother whose influence allows my children to be balanced and powerful contributors to the earth community. Thinking more deeply, I think that if my Spirit is truly connected to Source then I can be anything! And our indigenous Elders would definitely agree. We are limitless.
So, what do you really want to be?
