I look outside my window at tall, leafy trees with thick solid roots. Since I’ve lived here, they’ve withstood unbearable heat, tropical storms, and ice storms. Undoubtedly, the environment in which they now live has changed. These trees, once surrounded only by others and animals, now live amongst homes, playing children, and people moving busily about in cars. These thoughts lead me to honor their existence. These trees, like many around the earth, have stood the test of time for hundreds or thousands of years. They live. They breathe. They grow. They regenerate. Indigenous cultures around the world honor trees. They are believed to be our Elders and guardians. Think about how your own culture honors trees. There’s the tree of life, wish trees, tree faeries common in European indigenous spirituality, and the even the bodhi tree. In West Africa, and now in Afro-Brazilian cultures, trees are adorned. In many cultures, the tree stakes and represents a sacred space.
Trees have seen and experienced all the Earth has withstood. And as the trees are honored, so is the Earth, our Mother. She gives life to all that grows on this precious planet.
