Oprah’s most recent Oprah’s Next Chapter interview was about John of God, a spiritual healer in Brazil who conducts sacred healings. I first heard of John of God many years ago when exploring ALL that the “alternative” spiritual world had to offer. I recall hearing about the power of love, spontaneous healing, and invisible surgeries. I’m sure everyone has their own opinion about the validity of such experiences. What I know for sure (to use Oprah speak) is that accounts of spiritual healings challenge our minds and often seek to push us from our comfort zones. After seeing the images and hearing about people’s experiences in Brazil, I began to wonder about healing.

It is well known that many indigenous cultures acknowledge and practice an element of natural or spiritual healing. For example, African cultures may use drums, dance, and sacred words to invite healing. Some Indian cultures use mantra and mudras. Most obvious in American culture are the power of affirmations or prayer to spark healing. No matter the culture, it is evident that some combination of mindfulness and spirituality can put one in a state of healing. In fact, the common thread is that a different “state” is required to call in healing. Be it a different state of mind or higher energy state, a shift is required.

In Oprah’s interview, one guide noted that the “veil is lifted” in the area where John of God lives, thus inferring that the connection to Spirit is strong. It is this veil that those who are seeking healing must touch and permeate to invite the healing that indigenous peoples believe is not only possible, but our right. Whether one chooses a trip to Brazil or to visit many other healers who practice around the world, ultimately, the Spirit chooses to walk the journey toward the healing light. Only when the journey has been had, can one truly know if spiritual healing is all in one’s mind, one’s heart, or Spirit. Many Blessings!
